Love your white walls? Me too! In an age where interior spaces are color-drenched and walls and ceilings are layered with wallpaper and painted trim-work, it can leave you feeling a little overwhelmed, left out of the loop, or maybe even feeling like your home is out of style if you've got plain white walls. Don't get me wrong... I love seeing a good color-drenched room. Sometimes it's exactly what the space needs to feel pulled together and cozy (hello, cozy powder bath). And wallpaper... I've wallpapered many client spaces, and often times mix wallpaper patterns in adjoining spaces. It works, trust me.
But what if the understated white walls were the unsung hero here? Hear me out.
White walls don't have to be washed out and boring. What if those walls were the perfect blank canvas? What if those white walls were the gateway to timeless, cozy spaces with endless possibilities.
White walls can be tricky... it requires intentionality. It requires thoughtfulness with the things you bring into the room. You're not relying on the walls to do all the work for you. I'm talking a space where your textiles, furniture and artwork become the standout.
In a world that is over-stimulated, over commercialized, and over-consumption awaits around every corner; we're longing for rest. We're longing for spaces that allow us to disconnect to connect. Spaces that are interesting and inviting without having to try so hard.
I've compiled the top three ways I like to compliment those white walls and allow them to shine like the heroes they are. And just think of all the time you'll save not having to prep and hang wallpaper, or mask and paint. And the bonus? You'll save even more time not having to remove said wallpaper and paint over that uber dark wall color in the future.
Textiles

Textiles can elevate and add personality to any space. Don't be afraid of adding color, pattern and texture to... everything. It's a really great way to add interest to a room without the commitment of paint or wallpaper. Coordinating textiles (the area rug, bedding and drapery) really tie the whole look together creating cozy perfection. The white walls, then become the best supporting actress... soft and subtle, yet still a star.
Artwork

Gallery walls and large-scale standalone art are a simple way to add interest to a space. White walls don't compete for attention. Instead, they create the perfect canvas for the art to stand out and be seen. Make it your own. Collecting pieces of art is one of my favorite ways to add character and personality to a home.
Unique and Unexpected Details

Details deserve to be on stage... front and center. The painted details on this console cabinet paired with the details found in each plate on display, create a visual interest that rivals even the best color-drenched room (and a lot easier to "re-paint" when you're ready for a change). Little details like this are the things people remember about your home. And if thrifting is your thing, this will definitely keep your treasure hunting heart happy for years.
So, don't let the current trends discourage you or leave you thinking that you need to add all sorts of pattern and color to your walls in order for it to be interesting. If something a little softer is your style, let this be your sign. Embrace the white walls and enjoy making your home uniquely your own.
